2008 Call for Scores

The Seventh Aliénor International Harpsichord Composition Competition, Salem College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA—March 6-8, 2008.

Please note that the Deadline for submission is past!

Purpose: To encourage the composition of solo music for harpsichord and chamber music for harpsichord with modern or period instruments.

Aliénor Awards

Solo category: Up to 6 finalists will be awarded $600 each. An additional award of $500 (1st prize), $300 (2nd prize), $200 (3rd prize) will be awarded at the final concert (see Judging below). Winners will have the opportunity to be published by Wayne Leupold Editions, Inc.

Duo category: Up to 3 finalists will be awarded $800 each. An additional amount of $500 (1st prize), $300 (2nd prize), $200 (3rd prize) will be awarded at the final concert (see Judging below).

Category 1: Harpsichord Solo

"Art of Writing for the Harpsichord–extending the possibilities" Three or more preludes, with a total duration of 6-10 minutes, using “L’art de toucher le clavecin” by François Couperin as an inspiration. These pieces should be suitable for non-professional amateurs or students, written in a contemporary style—not in a Baroque imitation. Harpsichord range should be no more than F-1 to F-5. Required registration should not include 16 foot registers or pedals. The ultimate goal is to create a collection of accessible pieces suitable for publication, and usable by harpsichord enthusiasts worldwide.

Category 2: Duo with harpsichord

Harpsichord with one other acoustic instrument, modern or period. The piece should be between 8 and 12 minutes long, in one or more movements, and may be composed to a professional skill level.

Only one entry per composer may be submitted in each category. Submitted works must have been written in the last 10 years and not previously entered. The composer must own all copyrights and publishing rights to the submitted works. The competition is open to any composer regardless of age or nationality. There is no entry fee. The composer's name must not appear on the score or CD.

Postmark Deadline: November 1, 2007

Judging: A panel of three judges will review the submissions using the criteria of accessibility, musical quality, and inventiveness. As many as six finalists may be chosen in the solo category, and as many as three finalists in the chamber music category. The finalists’ compositions will be performed in concert during the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society (SEHKS) conference, Salem College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, March 6-8, 2008. The prizes will be ranked by vote of the audience. Please submit four full scores, parts, and four CD recordings (live or computer-computer-generated) along with the completed submission form to:
